Bourne 250 Launch Event

A special event to open a year celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Hugh Bourne, one of the founders of Primitive Methodism.

Open to the public from 1pm – 5pm: Collection Encounter with prize exhibits belonging and relating to Hugh Bourne from both the John Rylands and Englesea Brook collections. This part of the day does not require any ticket.

Ticketed event: 4pm – 6.30pm (though still free)

Refreshments in the John Rylands Atrium followed by three short presentations on aspects of Hugh Bourne’s work:

  • Prof. David Bebbington setting the context of Hugh Bourne’s ministry; nonconformity and society in the early 19th century.
  • Dr Jill Barber, exploring the place of women and lay people in the movement
  • Rev Dr Tim Macquiban looking at the distinctive features of PM worship and spirituality together with the place of education.
