Heritage Talk: Threading Faith, Memory and Self-Care: Sewing and Primitive Methodism

November 11, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Illustration for forthcoming Heritage Talk on sewing and Primitive Methodism

In Threading Faith, Memory and Self-Care: Sewing and Primitive Methodism Clare Holdsworth will discuss the potential benefits of therapeutic sewing with reference to her own practice of memorial remaking and the collection of community textiles held in the Englesea Brook Museum of Primitive Methodism. In addition to exploring how these sewing practices reveal an ongoing tension between the value of productive labour and the necessity of spending time well, she will offer observations on different sewing practices, the various textiles in the Museum collection and how Methodist teaching intersects with the philosophy of time.

Clare Holdsworth is Professor of Social Geography at Keele University. An expert on time and wellbeing, Clare is an enthusiastic sewer and current occupant of the former Sydney Primitive Methodist Chapel in Crewe.
