Every year, during Lent and Advent we invite you to join us for a free series of four weekly online study sessions via Zoom.

Lent 2025: Turning Points

For Lent 2025 the Rev Rob Hilton will present our annual series of 4 online study sessions. Under the series title Turning Points Rob will explore the moments in Mark’s Gospel which took Jesus to the cross and beyond.

  • Wednesday 19th March 10.30am. Blind Bartimaeus – What did he actually see?
One of the most famous healing miracles is the turning point of the plot as it unfolds. Is there more to it than meets the eye?
  • Wednesday 26th March 10.30am. The pain of communicating – Jesus’ invitation to take up the cross
Every disciple hears Jesus’ invitation to ‘Take up your cross and follow me’. What did Mark understand Jesus to mean when he said this? What does it mean for us?
  • Wednesday 9th April 10.30am. ‘Let the children’ – radical inclusion
Sick people, women, children, blind beggars and the poor: Jesus’ mission in Galilee included everyone that was excluded by the religious authorities. What does this mean for us?
  • Wednesday 16th April 10.30am. Resurrection is just the start – the Möbius strip approach to Mark
Surely a couple of frightened women left figuratively hanging in mid air is the actual culmination of the greatest story ever told? How, when, and where does Mark’s gospel come to an end?
The Rev Rob Hilton

Rob Hilton has always been fascinated by the way the New Testament came to be and how that affects what is in it. He has been a Methodist Minister since 1992. He has built his own shepherd’s hut, he once ran a marathon, and last year he qualified as a steam locomotive fireman. He is also married to Ruth,  the Director of the Englesea Brook Chapel and Museum of Primitive Methodism, which is hosting these talks!
