In George Edwards and the General Strike the Rev Graham Hedger looks at the activities of the Primitive Methodist politician George Edwards during the 9 day strike of 1926, focusing on Edwards’ support for the mineworkers and their families, prompted by a fiercely moral Christian socialism based on the Bible rather than Karl Marx.
Graham Hedger is a retired Anglican minister. His ministry was based in Norfolk and Suffolk, working in and supporting rural churches. For some of the time he also worked on church and society issues, often in an ecumenical context across the East of England. For many years he has been researching agricultural trade unionism in East Anglia. Now in retirement in Lincolnshire he is writing up his research. In 2026 he hopes to publish a fresh biography of Sir George Edwards focusing the synergy between his faith and politics.
