Heritage Talk: The Fate Of Fonts

When a simple bowl would do, why did some Primitive Methodist Chapels acquire small but highly decorative baptismal fonts? Where did they get them from and what might they tell us about evolving attitudes towards childhood and Christian parenting? Today, when many coming forward for baptism are looking for a more immersive experience, we might ask what is the fate of the font? Alison Butler explores the history, symbolism and future of the Methodist baptismal font.

Alison Butler served as Liaison Officer for Methodist Historic Objects from 2015 – 2023. She is fascinated by the variety of Methodist baptismal fonts around the country and our diverse attitude towards them.
