Black History Exhibition

To mark Black History Month, which runs throughout October, our new exhibition exploring the Black History of Primitive Methodism is now open and will run until the end of October 2022.  Beginning with Methodist opposition to the slave trade, it explores the dificulties of remembering PM missions to Africa and ends by looking at home missions in the UK, such as the famous Whitechapel Mission. Along the way it highlights stories such as that of Zilpha Elaw, an “American Female of Colour” who wrote about the race and gender discrimination that she experienced whilst preaching in British chapels in the 1840s, and tackles questions about how we can join with those who share our faith today.
In addition to the Exhibition there will, throughout October, be tours of our Collections Store to explore the Black History artefacts not exhibited in the museum.
